NEWS: Ballerina – Movie Review

Movie Poster

Just a quick note and not one I’m emailing to everyone so as not to be a nudge.

Just saw Ballerina tonight and it was a lot of fun!!

Short version of review? If you liked/loved the John Wick movies – Go See it!

Longer version: It does a good job in such a short time (I’m spoiled – I want two hour movies) of creating the backstory and then going into the future. It integrates well with the Wickian Universe and there’s a seen from John Wick 3: Parabellum that we see from a different point of view. Eve (De Aramas’s character) and John even have a little conversation together before he leaves the theater.

When the actual part of the story fits into the John timeline isn’t so clear to me but it wasn’t jarring. He is still him, very him. Yeah (John’s favorite word – I rewatched 1-4 before seeing Ballerina). The violence is well choreographed and has a definite difference in feel to it from Wick shots (pun intended).

For my powerful women out there, I loved a scene where her advice it “to fight like a girl.” There’s even a song by the same title that plays during the credits. It’s a good song. No scenes during or after the credits. Sigh. I was hoping for some clue about John’s actually surviving movie 4.

There’s a couple scenes in it with Lance Reddick as Charon which is so very cool they shot them before he passed away. I clapped a little for each one and his credit at the end. No one else clapped but what do I care? Do you need to see it on the big screen? Not really. It’ll work well on nice big HDTVs (like mine).

Okay, opinion time…after having watched Wick 4 I am positive he isn’t dead. John sustained way worse wounds in the other movies and survived just fine. I think his death is so he can truly be “free.” I think Winston knows but the King does not. This is why Winston ambiguously answers “who knows?” to King’s question. Time will tell if I’m right. There was a preview for a Keanu Reeves movie where he plays an angel and is a comedy. hmm…redemption?? lol.
