So, maybe I’m going to review really cheesy 80s movies. So, maybe it’s my blog and I can post if I want to…post if I want to…(okay, some of you have to know the song “It’s My Party and I’ll Cry if I want to”)
This movie is from 1982. I was two years our of high school and two years into my degree when it came out. I started university the fall after I graduated. I think my parents wanted to keep me busy. lol.
I need to warn you that this is the cheesiest of cheesy movies. It’s nearly cringe-worthy but I love it anyway. Lee Horsely plays a hero that is remeniscent of Errol Flynn in Robin Hood or Captain Blood. I kind of disagree with the subtitle up there about a princes enslaved by passion – that’s a bit misleading since she comes off as rather…prudish in the beginning?
Anyway, there will be more than a few actors you see that you might reognize from later shows or movies. I’m not sure they’d like to admit they were in this one. The really, really bad guy is played by Richard Moll or “Bull” from Night Court but I don’t think you’ll recognize him except by size.
I’m including it on this blog because besides being cheesy it does have more than it’s fair share of T and a little of A if you are into it. I’m tempted to comment on never underestimating your oration skills because when the hero kisses a girl…she is kissed! They just want to save him and die for him and so on.
The music is fun to me. It reminds me of the 1973 Three Musketeers with its feeling of bravado. One cool thing about this movie is it is currently only $5 on Vudu (I know Fandango bought them but I still call them Vudu…like Twitter). There is a fair amount of violence in it. The FX are…very 1982. Hard to believe Star Wars came out in 1976 but most movies weren’t able to afford the price tag of Lucasfilm LTD.
Bad language? No. Sex? Hinted at…lots of kissing and people on top of other people but not really anything graphic. We don’t even get to see a bootstrap scene at the end. See, the “princess” hires the hero on the condition he can have her do anything with him or to him for one night. Funnily, she reminds him of their “unfinished business” right after all the baddies are done with.
So…have a laugh, sometimes when you are supposed to and sometimes when you’re not. It was definitely worth the 5 bucks to me.
Jon Grey.
